LTL Freight Shipping Definition:
Residential or Limited Access Delivery Service: When you order a product that needs LTL (Less Than Truckload Freight Shipping) from our store, your shipping charges are calculated using the weight of your shipment and your destination zip code. If the weight of your item/order exceeds 150 lbs., we have to ship your order to you on a wood or plastic pallet, using a trucking company. Large cargo trucks do not normally travel in residential neighborhoods since they are too big and heavy for the road and can cause accidents, so the carrier might need to transfer the cargo to a small truck that can fit on smaller streets where there are only houses or areas with limited or restricted access. This requires extra handling and special arrangements, so they charge more for residential or limited access service.
All Residential or limited access deliveries will be ordered with liftgate services. If you only need liftgate services and you are at a commercial business address, you can add the liftgate service only in our other listing.
Lifgate Service: When the truck arrives at your delivery address, the truck driver will determine whether or not a lift gate is necessary to make the delivery. A lift gate is mounted on the back of the truck that operates by mechanically raising and lowering a platform during loading and unloading of merchandise to the ground or street level.
Freight carriers charge a fee to use the liftgate and won't always send a truck with this device if it is not pre-ordered, however, the lift gate is sometimes required to make your delivery possible!
You will need this service unless you already have a loading dock, or you have a forklift to unload the shipment from the truck.
Benefits of LTL shipping.
Increases security and minimizes risk of damage: LTL shipments are secured and shrink wrapped onto pallets before being loaded onto a truck. One well-packaged pallet has a better chance of remaining intact and un-damaged than shipments with multiple smaller boxes sent via FedEx or UPS which get tossed around on conveyors, multiple delivery trucks, and handled roughly by people throwing or pushing boxes in sorting centers.
Factors that determine LTL shipping rates:
Location: Generally, the further the distance, the higher the price. Residential deliveries take extra cost
Dimensions: The dimensions and weight of the shipment help determine the freight class, which directly affect the final rate. The denser a shipment, the less expensive per pound the rate will be. Something big, but lightweight will be very expensive since the carrier cannot fit as much onto a truck.
Mode: LTL shipments can be expedited for an additional fee.
Type: A shipment that requires special handling or equipment (perishables, fragile, hazardous items) will lead to higher costs.
Notes:
LTL courier service usually takes 5 to 10 business days. If a delivery appointment is required or residential limited access service is needed, this may add even more time before a delivery is attempted.
